Red Ribbon Week is a national, school-based effort to prevent the use of alcohol, drugs, and tobacco among children and teens. The campaign is observed annually during the last full week of October and was started in 1985, in honor of DEA Special Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, who was killed while investigating drug trafficking.
Red Ribbon Week raises awareness about the dangers of drug use and provides students with the skills they need to resist peer pressure and make healthy choices. Schools and communities across the country participate in Red Ribbon Week by hosting a variety of events, including rallies, assemblies, and guest speakers.
