Memorial Day 2025 is a federal holiday in the United States observed on the last Monday in May. It commemorates the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military.
Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day, and it was first observed in 1868. The holiday was established by General John A. Logan, who was the commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of Union veterans of the Civil War. Logan designated May 30th as the day for Decoration Day, and he called for the decoration of the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers and flags.
