The Ethiopian calendar, also known as the Ethiopic calendar, is a solar calendar used in Ethiopia and Eritrea. It is one of the oldest calendars in the world, dating back to the 4th century AD. The Ethiopian calendar is based on the Coptic calendar, which is itself based on the ancient Egyptian calendar. The Ethiopian calendar has 12 months of 30 days each, plus 5 or 6 epagomenal days at the end of the year. The epagomenal days are used to account for the difference between the solar year and the lunar year.
The Ethiopian calendar is important for religious and cultural reasons. It is used to determine the dates of Ethiopian holidays and festivals. The Ethiopian New Year, known as Enkutatash, is celebrated on September 11th or 12th. The Ethiopian Christmas, known as Genna, is celebrated on January 7th. The Ethiopian Easter, known as Fasika, is celebrated on a different date each year, but it always falls between March and April.
